As we mark World Press Freedom Day, we celebrate the power of journalism to shed light on important issues, amplify voices, and drive positive change. This year, we are thrilled to announce the upcoming Family Planning News Network (FPNN) reporting trip to Lilongwe, Malawi, from May 22nd to May 26th, 2024.
This inaugural trip, made possible through a partnership between the 2025 International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP), W. H. Gates Sr. Institute for Population and Reproductive Health (WHGI) at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the Ntha Foundation, aims to showcase the transformative impact of family planning and reproductive health investments across Malawi.
FPNN is dedicated to increasing local and regional reporting on family planning, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), and connected development issues. Through this platform, journalists have the opportunity to engage with powerful stories, influential community leaders, and new perspectives on key research and data related to reproductive health and family planning.
Malawi has made remarkable strides in doubling the rate of modern contraceptive use compared to sub-Saharan Africa, significantly improving women’s health and socio-economic wellbeing. Despite challenges, such as rural distribution and reaching adolescents, the country has made various contraceptive choices available nationwide, showcasing the transformative impact of family planning investments. This success underscores the importance of government commitment and innovative strategies in driving positive change.
The 2024 FPNN Reporting Trip in Malawi will offer participants the chance to connect with experts, community leaders, and beneficiaries of family planning and SRHR programs. Attendees will attend key briefings, learn about innovative solutions, and visit local programs and initiatives that highlight successes and innovations in the field.
“This reporting trip presents a unique opportunity for journalists to delve first-hand into the stories and experiences shaping the landscape of family planning and sexual and reproductive health in Africa,” said Kellie Welborn, Director of the Secretariat for the 2025 International Conference on Family Planning.
Ntha Foundation is proud to collaborate with FPNN on this important initiative, aligning with our advocacy priorities in family planning and SRHR. We look forward to engaging with journalists and content creators from the FPNN community during this reporting week,” shared Rhoda Kamwaza, Managing Director of the Ntha Foundation.
The 2024 FPNN Reporting Trip to Malawi is made possible through partnership with W. H. Gates Sr. Institute for Population and Reproductive Health and the International Conference on Family Planning. Journalists interested in participating are encouraged to apply by the priority deadline, Thursday, April 18, 2024, at midnight EST.
As we celebrate World Press Freedom Day, let us continue to support journalism’s role in driving collective action towards a healthier, more equitable world.
