Summit of the Future Workshop: UNITING FOR PROGRESS

On the 6th of August, 2024, the Ntha Foundation had the privilege of attending the Summit of the Future: High-Level National Consultative Workshop held at the Sunbird Capital Hotel in Lilongwe. The day began with an early morning breakfast session, which served as an excellent opportunity for informal networking and preliminary discussions on Malawi’s developmental goals and priorities.

What is the Summit of the Future?

The Summit of the Future is a global initiative aimed at addressing the pressing challenges of our time by fostering international cooperation and setting a forward-looking agenda for sustainable development. It focuses on a wide range of issues, including climate change, technological innovation, economic stability, and social equity, with the goal of creating a more inclusive and resilient future for all. The summit brings together government leaders, international organizations, and various stakeholders to align national priorities with global objectives and ensure a collaborative approach to addressing these challenges.

Morning Breakfast Session

The breakfast session allowed participants to mingle and engage in informal discussions about the day’s agenda. Key representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Planning Commission, the United Nations System in Malawi, and international ambassadors were present, fostering a collaborative atmosphere.

Workshop Highlight

The formal workshop commenced with opening remarks from prominent figures, including Dr. Mwaiwawo Polepole from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Her Excellency Ms. Ute König, the Ambassador of Germany to Malawi, and Ms. Rebecca Addah-Dontoh, the UN Resident Coordinator in Malawi. These speeches set the tone for a day of insightful presentations and discussions focused on aligning Malawi’s national priorities with the broader objectives of the Summit of the Future.

Key Sessions:

  • Overview of the Summit of the Future: This session provided a comprehensive overview of the summit’s goals and the importance of global cooperation in achieving sustainable development.
  • Malawi’s Priorities: The National Planning Commission led a detailed presentation on Malawi’s specific developmental priorities under the summit, emphasizing policy planning and strategic initiatives.
  • Discussion and Feedback: Participants engaged in constructive discussions, offering feedback and suggestions on how to effectively implement the proposed strategies.

The workshop concluded with a session led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, summarizing the key takeaways and outlining the way forward. Closing remarks were delivered by Ms. Rebecca Addah-Dontoh and Honourable Nancy Tembo, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, who reaffirmed their commitment to the summit’s objectives and Malawi’s development.

Conclusion

The Ntha Foundation’s participation in the Summit of the Future workshop was an enriching experience, providing valuable insights into global and national developmental priorities. The workshop not only facilitated meaningful discussions but also strengthened the collaborative efforts towards a sustainable and resilient future for Malawi. Through our involvement, we aim to contribute to the realization of the summit’s goals and support Malawi’s journey towards sustainable development.
