A Call for Confidence in Local Innovation: MALAWI’S ICT DILEMMA

In recent discussions on the state of Malawi’s ICT industry, a recurring theme has emerged: the lack of confidence in locally developed solutions. This issue has been brought to light by key industry players, including Sparc Systems Limited and Ntha Foundation, highlighting a critical barrier to the sustainable growth of Malawi’s tech sector.

Local ICT firms have expressed frustration over government procurement practices that tend to favor foreign companies, sidelining homegrown startups and draining much-needed foreign exchange. Despite policies intended to support local businesses, these policies often remain unimplemented, leaving Malawian tech innovators at a disadvantage.

Nthanda Manduwi, founder of the Ntha Foundation, emphasized that this lack of confidence in local solutions not only stunts the growth of the tech industry but also hampers the potential for ICT to drive broader economic development in Malawi. She noted that ICT has the power to revolutionize sectors such as health, education, agriculture, and governance, fostering inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

The Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Authority (PPDA) has acknowledged these concerns and indicated that the legal framework is being reviewed to better support local ICT providers. However, as Manduwi and others have pointed out, real change will only come when there is a tangible shift in confidence—both in government and the private sector—toward investing in Malawian innovation.
