At the forefront of Malawi’s growing entrepreneurial movement is the Zantchito Entrepreneurship Voices (ZEV) initiative. Recently, this vibrant platform hosted a panel discussion exploring the critical role of hubs in incubating and supporting businesses across the country. Among the esteemed speakers was our founder, Ms. Nthanda Manduwi, who brought her unique perspective and extensive experience to the conversation.
Joining Nthanda on the panel were Ms. Jacqueline Banda, founder of Jeyie Foods, and Dr. Serah Gondwe, head of TACE Agribiz Hub at LUANAR. The discussion was moderated by Ms. Blessings Mpinganjira, who steered the conversation into impactful and insightful territory.
About ZEV: A National Platform for Entrepreneurship
ZEV, a key component of the Zantchito initiative, is spearheaded by the European Union in partnership with the Government of Malawi. This program is designed to create a nationwide conversation on entrepreneurship, blending inspiration with actionable insights. By leveraging a diverse mix of TV, radio, social media, and live events, ZEV has created a space where Malawians can engage with the possibilities of entrepreneurship and gain access to essential resources.
The initiative has three core goals:
- Broaden Understanding: Helping Malawians see entrepreneurship as a viable and transformative career path.
- Encourage and Empower: Uplifting youth and women entrepreneurs to overcome challenges and achieve their business dreams.
- Create a National Culture: Developing a uniquely Malawian entrepreneurial identity rooted in resilience and innovation.
Through these efforts, ZEV is sparking a vibrant national dialogue, inspiring individuals and communities alike to embrace entrepreneurship as a pathway to progress and prosperity.
Panel Highlights: The Role of Hubs
The panel discussion emphasized the transformative impact of hubs in supporting entrepreneurial ventures. Speaking from her experience with the Ntha Foundation and its flagship initiatives like the Kwathu Kollective, Nthanda Manduwi highlighted how hubs serve as ecosystems of support for entrepreneurs, especially youth and women.
Key takeaways from the discussion include:

- Bridging Resource Gaps: Jacqueline Banda shared how hubs can provide entrepreneurs with access to funding, technology, and market insights, enabling businesses like Jeyie Foods to scale effectively.
- Collaboration and Community: Hubs bring together entrepreneurs, fostering collaboration and creating a sense of community. Dr. Serah Gondwe illustrated how this dynamic works in practice at TACE Agribiz Hub, where agripreneurs are thriving through collective effort and shared resources.
- Women and Youth Empowerment: Both Nthanda Manduwi and Jacqueline Banda addressed the unique challenges faced by women and young entrepreneurs. They highlighted how hubs and initiatives like ZEV are actively working to dismantle these barriers, ensuring inclusivity and equal access to opportunities.
Ntha Foundation’s Perspective
The Ntha Foundation, under Nthanda’s leadership, has been at the forefront of creating spaces for collaboration and innovation. Through the Kwathu Kollective, the foundation provides mentorship, resources, and training to empower young African entrepreneurs.
Nthanda shared insights into how the foundation’s programs are helping entrepreneurs in Malawi and across the continent develop sustainable ventures that contribute to their communities. Her emphasis on the ripple effect of empowering individuals resonated strongly with the audience and fellow panelists.
Looking Ahead: ZEV’s Impact
The ZEV initiative represents a critical step forward in building an entrepreneurial culture in Malawi. By showcasing real stories and providing actionable advice, ZEV is equipping entrepreneurs with the tools they need to succeed. Initiatives like these not only foster individual success but also catalyze broader economic growth.
