Celebrating Africa Day of Decentralisation and Local Development

On this significant day, August 10, we at Ntha Foundation join hands with the continent to celebrate the Africa Day of Decentralisation and Local Development. It’s a day that shines a spotlight on the pivotal role of decentralization in enhancing local governance, driving sustainable development, and empowering our communities.

Decentralization is more than just a policy; it’s a pathway to inclusive growth. By transferring authority and resources from central to local governments, we can ensure that decisions are made closer to the people they affect. This fosters a more responsive and accountable governance structure, where local voices are not just heard but are instrumental in shaping their future.

At Ntha Foundation, we are deeply committed to empowering African women and girls. Our mission aligns perfectly with the spirit of this day. We believe that by investing in women, we invest in the future of our continent. Through our M’mawa Apprenticeship Programme, Nyenyezi Fellowship Program, and Digital Skills for Africa learning management system we strive to create a world where every woman has the opportunity to reach her full potential.

We also take this opportunity to reflect on the African Charter on the Values and Principles of Decentralization, Local Governance and Local Development, adopted in June 2014, which serves as a guiding light for our efforts in promoting democratic governance and public service management1.

As we commemorate this day, let’s renew our dedication to building stronger, more resilient communities through decentralized governance. Let’s continue to work together to create a future where every local community can thrive and contribute to the grand tapestry of African development.

Happy Africa Day of Decentralisation and Local Development!
